The NBA was formed in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. The BAA was created by eleven of the most prominent sports organizations in the United States.

The eleven founding members included the American Basketball League, Syracuse Nationals, Anderson Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Pittsburgh Ironmen, St. Louis Bombers, Boston Celtics, and the National Basketball League, the predecessor to today’s NBA.
