The Monopoly game series was released in late 1895, and it was an immediate success, selling nearly a million copies in its first six months. The game featured a board with 32 property spaces, and sold for a penny.
The Monopoly board was invented by Charles Darrow, a former employee of the Parker Brothers, who had been challenged by his boss to create a board game that would have a wider appeal than the chess craze (at the time, chess was a more popular game than Monopoly).
