Hip Hop Music Definition & History

Hip hop music definition: When you think of the term “hip hop music“, what do you think of? Do you think of songs that have been played on the latest hip-hop station on the radio? … Or do you think of the people who have created hip hop music?

Well, either way, you’re probably wrong. It’s difficult to generalize hip hop music, since it’s an amalgamation of various musical genres.

A lot of the older generation would classify it as a form of “R&B”, while younger hip hop artists like Jay-Z or Kanye West wouldn’t care as much about the genre, since it’s mostly a newer genre.

Hip Hop Music History

Hip Hop music originated in the South Bronx in New York City in the early 1970s. It served as a reaction to the racial and political oppression that was taking place at that time, and brought a new culture of resistance into the world.

It was created by a group of African-American youth who were angry about the conditions many of them lived in.
